Experimental artist Gazel shares music video for ‘Mina’s Hymn’

Genre-blending British/Turkish songwriter and producer Gazel has shared the video for her latest single, ‘Mina’s Hymn’, ahead of her headline show at London’s St Pancras Church on February 27th.

Taken from her upcoming album Gazel’s Book Of Souls – where each track represents a different ‘soul’ from the protagonist’s subconscious – the video sees the character confront a figure amid surreal and dream-like imagery, with the track melding subtle hints of folk-tinged pop with ambient electronic tones to create an ever-changing progression of atmosphere.

Gazel explains; “Mina is an elderly widow, one of six characters that appear in Gazel’s Book of Souls. Mina watches memories of her youth through a window in the open desert where she has sat for centuries, fixing mankind’s eyes on the past. In our video, Gazel confronts Mina for the first time, only to find the face looking back at her is strangely familiar. Directed by Glen Travis and Sam Hooper, for this film we enjoyed using a surreal and ambient style to reflect our story, as the barriers between dreams, visions and reality begin to crumble.”

Taking influence from both the mysticism and the folk music of her Middle-Eastern roots, Gazel’s music references everything from world music to electronica, reminiscent in part of Grimes and Four Tet. Imbuing her music with profound philosophical references, the resulting creations form what Gazel calls “music from a fractured mindscape”.

Gazel has previously performed sold-out shows at venues including the Borderline, The Waiting Room and Birthdays, with her live shows an unmissable immersive experience of visual and sonic performance reflecting lyrical narratives and characters.

‘Mina’s Hymn’ follows Gazel’s debut single, ‘Pointing At The Moon’, released last year, and comes ahead of her headline show at London’s St Pancras Church on February 27th – tickets are available here.
